When you first set up your WordPress blog, you have to make approximately 10 decisions a minute. It doesn’t have to be hard to start a blog, but there are a lot of things to take care of if you want your blog to look professional from the get-go and skip the awkward beginner phase.
You have to choose a theme and create a design that turns your visitors into followers, pick colors and fonts, consider what kind of blogger you want to be and start building your brand.
But building a blog is not all fonts and colors, is it? If you run a WordPress blog, you’re probably already familiar with WordPress plugins. In case you are not, WordPress plugins are those life-saving add-ons you can install with a couple of clicks to add functionality to your site. Like apps for your blog. Cool, right?
There are thousands upon thousand of WordPress plugins available out there. Some of them are weird, the bad ones will break your blog, and some of them are just plain awesome! Today’s post is about 5 solid WordPress plugins for your blog. 5 basic plugins no blogger should have to live without. Oh, and did I mention that all these plugins are free?
Akismet is your technical (slightly robotty) BFF! The Akismet plugin protects your blog from spam comments. In the two years I have used Akismet on my personal blog, the plugin has protected my site from no less then 97 thousand spam comments. Imagine how many hours I would have spent cleaning out my comment queue if I hadn’t installed it. That’s math I can’t even do.
If Akismet is your BFF, Yoast is your manager. Yoast makes SEO quick and easy and helps potential readers find your content on google. Green means go, and I think you should!

3. WP Post Signature
The WP Post Signature plugin allows you to attach a signature to all your posts and/or pages. Use this plugin for an opt-in form for your email list, a Bloglovin follow button, your signature, a short bio – you name it. The possibilities are endless.
4. WP Super Cache
I’m not entirely sure that anyone really understands the specifics behind this plugin, but everyone agrees that it’s a plugin you have to have. The non-nerdy explanation is that it makes your blog faster and prevents your site from breaking down if you suddenly experience a lot of unexpected traffic. Who knows – maybe you’ll be featured on the Forbes front page some day. If you want to know more about the plugin, you can read about it here.
5. Google Analytics Dashboard for WP
It is possible to use Google Analytics without the corresponding plugin, but m-a-n does this plugin make your life easier! You can keep an eye on your visitors and track your traffic without having to leave your blog for anything but the more advanced options. Your statistics are right there on your dashboard.
